Maintenance of The Ladby Dragon
The Viking Museum’s Viking ship, The Ladby Dragon, was built from 2011 – 2016. The ship is a reconstruction of The Ladby Ship and is built in collaboration with The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. But a Viking ship does not last forever if it is not towed ashore and maintained every winter. The ship must be bottom scraped, tarred, repaired, and painted with the two characteristic colors The Ladby Ship was painted with, blue and yellow. In addition, sails, rigs, and oars, which must also be impregnated and inspected.
The ship’s maintenance is carried out by a volunteer group at The Viking Museum, who take care of the ship all year round, so that it lasts and is ready to sail during the summer. Every Wednesday morning at the Viking Museum, you can meet the group for maintenance, follow their work, and hear about The Ladby Dragon.
